NIGHT OF DREAD WORKSHOPS

Clay & Paper invites you to get creative with us in Dufferin Grove Park in a series of workshops leading up to the 17th Annual Night of Dread. You will be building and decorating your own mask, or making a thoughtful shrine with your friends and family.

Admission is free. Materials and snacks are provided.

SHRINE BUILDING

Honour a person, a place, a time or an idea with Clay & Paper Theatre’s Shrine Building Workshop. Create a sacred space/object, to mark an ending and remember and celebrate those who have gone before us. This workshop is an opportunity to build shrines that will be featured in the NIGHT OF DREAD installation ‘The Valley of Remembrance’.

Craft materials and a cardboard box (which will form the basis of the shrine) will be provided. In order to personalize your shrine, consider bringing your own specific elements (e.g. photos, found objects, fabric, etc) that will help to better capture the person/place/time/idea that you would like to honour.

A shrine can be built in one 3-hour session. But multiple workshops sessions are available if you would like to return and take more time with your creation. Instruction and coaching will be provided by a Clay & Paper Theatre artist/builder.

WILD MAN MASK MAKING

Find your Wild Man – or Woman! Create your own Wild Man mask and noisemaker and then come and parade with Clay & Paper Theatre on October 29th at the 17th Annual Night of Dread. This much-loved community celebration incorporates international folk and theatrical traditions, drawing inspiration from festivals of death and remembrance around the world.

The Wild Man is a folkloric figure that harkens back to the ancient traditions of most European countries. The Wild Man rituals mark the seasonal cycles, of fertility, life, and death. Join this year’s parade contingent of Clay & Paper Theatre’s Wild Men and Women at NIGHT OF DREAD, as we mock and banish our private and collective fears together.

Building materials will be provided. We will employ a technique of paper and cardboard sculpting to create the masks themselves. Papier-mache can be employed to bring a smoother surface to your mask. But we will NOT be sculpting with clay for these workshops. And your Wild Man and Woman won’t be complete without an ancient gnarled walking stick/noisemaker. We would encourage the colour palette for your mask be black and white, in keeping with Night of Dread theming.

It will take at least TWO 3-hour workshop sessions to make a mask and noisemaker, PARTICULARLY IF YOU DECIDE TO USE PAPIER-MACHE for your mask. But multiple workshops sessions are available (PLEASE SEE TIMES BELOW.) Instruction and coaching will be provided by a Clay & Paper Theatre artist/builder.

This is an all ages activity (6 to 100!), but children MUST be accompanied and teamed with an adult.
